Mary E. Sullivan
March 01, 1915 - February 22, 2010
Retired Foxboro School Teacher Mary E. Sullivan of Foxboro, Massachusetts died February 22, 2010 after a long and interesting life.
She was born March 1, 1915 in Whitinsville, MA, the daughter of the late Edward John and Anna Zmudsky. She was the older sister of the late James E. Zmudsky.
She graduated from Salem State Teachers College in 1937 and arrived in Foxboro to begin her career teaching Commercial subjects at Foxboro High School. She married Earle D. Sullivan, then editor of The Foxboro Reporter and a town Selectman, August 31, 1940. Their daughter, Mary Anne, was born in 1942. In 1947, the family moved to Los Alamos, New Mexico where Earle had been offered a position in the new government of Los Alamos. Mary thoroughly enjoyed her time in New Mexico with visits to Santa Fe and the nearby Indian Pueblos and just being part of the energy of the community with so many scientists and their families. Earle died unexpectedly in 1951 so Mary and Mary Anne returned to their home in Foxboro.
Mary returned to teaching at Foxboro High School eventually becoming Head of the Business Department. She enjoyed teaching and was the favorite of many students until her retirement in 1976.
After she retired, Mary and her special friend, the late Claude Young, enjoyed golfing, bowling, entertaining friends and spending time with family both in Foxboro and at her summer cottage in Popponesset on Cape Cod. "Grammy", as she was lovingly known, adored her grandchildren and then her great grandchildren. She was a sports fan, loved those Red Sox and was so happy when they won the World Series "in her lifetime". She was an excellent bridge player. She was a member of Bethany Congregational Church.
In her later years, she formed several close friendships with her neighbors in the Foxboro Baker Street Historic District and joined them frequently in pleasant social activities.
She is survived by her daughter, Mary Anne Baker of Foxboro, MA, grandchildren Jon C. Baker and his wife, Dorothy of Baltimore, MD, Anne Hyland and her husband, Chris of Foxboro, Stephen Baker and his fiancee, Erin Ryan of Walpole, MA, great grandchildren Jake, Aidan and Alexandra Hyland of Foxboro and Jack, Howell and Dorothy Baker of Baltimore, MD.
