William R. Apgar, age 68, died peacefully on November 8, 2017 at Norwood Hospital surrounded by his loving family. He was the beloved husband of Karen (Richendollar) Apgar.
Born in Newport, RI on July 31, 1949, he was the son of the late Harry and Phyllis (Holdsworth) Apgar. Bill grew up in Mansfield until his sophomore year and his family moved to Foxboro one week before the rival Foxboro/Mansfield football game in which Bill was a player on the Mansfield team, but due to the move, Bill became ineligible to play for either team. Bill graduated from Foxboro High School as Class President in 1968. He later earned his Associates Degree from Western New England College in Criminal Justice.
Bill, or as he was better known as, “Grumpy”, was a Massachusetts State Trooper for almost 40 years, starting his career as a Patrolman for the Foxboro Police Department. He later became a Massachusetts State Trooper spending six years at the Sturbridge Barracks, six months in the Grafton Barracks, then the rest of his career at the Foxboro Barracks until his retirement in October.
Grumpy loved softball and played on the Foxboro Softball League until he turned 60, he then played on the Senior League. He also played on the State Police League for many years. He was an avid Cribbage player and was a member of the Cribbage League in town for many years.
In addition to his wife Karen, Bill is survived by his daughters, Patrolman Kerry Apgar-Kilroy and her husband Rob of North Attleboro, Kendra Apgar of North Attleboro, Krystie Apgar of Norton, Katherine Apgar of Foxborough and Kelly Morel and her husband Joseph of Norton. His brothers Ronald Harwood and his wife Patricia of Saco, ME, Robert Apgar and his wife Joanne of North Attleboro, his sisters Sylvia Valade of North Attleboro and Carlene LaChance of Plainville, and the late Richard Harwood. Bill was preceded in death by his wife Linda (Kerrigan) Apgar. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are kindly invite to attend calling hours on Wednesday, November 15, 2017 from 2-6PM at the Roberts and Sons Funeral Home, 30 South Street, in Foxborough.
