Helen Hersey Dick

Beloved Wife

Helen Hersey Dick, a resident of the Doolittle Home, Foxboro MA since October , 1994 died on Friday, March 7, 2008. She was born in Stafford Springs, CT on June 14, 1918 while her parents, the Rev. Harry Adams and Lottie Champlin Hersey were residents of Foxboro. She was a member of the Foxboro Universalist Church.

Ms. Dick graduated from Danbury CT High School in 1936; received her BA Degree, Magna Cum Laude, from Jackson College for Women (Tufts College) in 1940; and did graduate work at Crane School of Religion on the same campus.

Ms. Dick will be remembered best by those who knew her in the various communities in which she lived as one who involved herself in activities that enriched the lives of children and adults, regardless of race or creed. She gave leadership to the Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts, League of Women Voters, the NAACP (of which she is a Life Member), food co-ops, and in local Unitarian Universalist churches where her husband, Rev. Robert T. Dick was the minister – Bristol, NY; Lyons, OH; West Hartford, CT; Belpre, OH; South Acton, MA; Springfield and Chester Depot, VT and Elkhart, IN.

Since 1940, as a member of the Fellowship of Reconciliation, an international pacifist organization, Ms. Dick has been engaged in various activities, projects and vigils related to peace. She was an officer of the Unitarian Universalist Peace Fellowship, and editor of its newsletter, UNIPAX. She also served on the Board of the UU Retired Ministers and Partners Association in charge of the Caring Network.

In 1975, Ms. Dick was named Vermont Mother of the Year and cited by Governor Salmon for her participation in the Selma to Montgomery, AL Civil Rights March in 1965. In Elkhart, IN she was nominated for her community service by the League of Women Voters for which she received recognition from the YWCA Honors Program.

Ms. Dick moved back to Springfield, VT in 1986 and was a member of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Springfield, VT, which named her Minister Emerita; served as secretary of the Board of Springfield Area Hospice Inc. as well as a member of the Senior Center Advisory Board. She was the accompanist for the Springfield Community Chorus for the first five years of its existence; and a piano teacher until her retirement in 1982.

Ms. Dick is survived by her husband, Rev. Robert Tyrrell Dick, whom she married in Danbury, CT in 1943; a son, Nathan Dick of Estes Park, CO; another son, Jeffrey Taft-Dick of Niger West Africa; a daughter, Noreen Redd of San Diego, CA; and three grandchildren, Jonathan Joya and Philip Taft-Dick.

Funeral Information

The body will be cremated and no services will be held. Ashes will be buried in the Ladies Union Cemetery, Stockton, IL.
